Thetan
You are a thetan, a spiritual being (taken from theta, the Greek symbol for thought or life). Not your eyes, not your brain, but you. You do not have a thetan, something you keep apart from yourself; you are a thetan. You would not speak of my thetan; you would speak of me.
Although much of what Scientology holds true may be echoed in many great philosophic teachings, what it offers is entirely new: an exact route through which anyone can regain the truth and simplicity of their spiritual self. Very pertinent was L. Ron Hubbard's examination into the phenomena known as exteriorization. Although various religious texts make mention of it, no one had considered the matter with such careful scrutiny. From this research Mr. Hubbard concluded that the thetan is able to leave the body and exist independent of the flesh. Exteriorized, the person can see without the body's eyes, hear without the body's ears and feel without the body's hands. Man previously had very little understanding of this detachment from his mind and body. With the act of exteriorization attainable in Scientology a person gains the certainty of one's spiritual self as seperate from the body.
The discoveries of Scientology are not only major philosophic breakthroughs, but they are also applicable principles as they explain the fundamental laws of life, why people behave the way they do, the impediments to survival and how best to overcome them. More than that Scientology offers you the way to claim your spiritual heritage.
The Mind
How is it that this potentially powerful spiritual being became but a puppet dancing on the end of unseen strings? Has he forgotten his own identity and believes he is a body? And that he now goes blindly from life to life, lacking memory, his self-awareness growing ever dimmer?
How is it that we cannot gain control of our lives, much less our destiny?
The answer is found in the nature of man's mind.
Just as you are not a body, neither are you a mind. While the nature of the mind has been argued endlessly in fields from philosophy to science, in Scientology it has been discovered that the mind is simply an accumulation of what are called mental image pictures. These mental image pictures are what we often think of as memory. They are three-dimensional colour pictures with sound and smell and all other perceptions, plus the conclusions and speculations of the individual.
These pictures are actually composed of energy. They have mass, they exist in space and they follow some very definate routines of behaviour, the most interesting of which is the fact they appear when somebody thinks of something. For example, if you think of a cat, you will get a mental image picture of a cat. This is the analytical mind--the rational, conscious and aware mind which thinks, observes data, remembers it and resolves problems.
But there is more to the mind than this.
The Reactive Mind
The Reactive Mind was discovered to be the sum of a person's past painful experiences, both physical and emotional and the mental image pictures contained within this part of the mind were given a technical term, engram, to describe them (engram is a biological term meaning a trace on a cell). The reactive mind records these mental images of pain and painful emotion when the person's analytical mind is either fully or partially unconscious. An engram could therefore be an incident of complete unconsciousness, such as a severe accident or medical operation, or partial unconsciousness such as an injury or illness. A painful emotion engram could include a severe failure or loss of a loved one, or any emotional trauma.
This is the mind that makes children cry in fear of the dark. It makes a man suppress his hopes, destroys relationships and kills a person before they have begun to live. It is the source of all of your irrational fears, nightmares, depression and stress.
Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health
Dianetics is the mental anatomy part of the Scientology religion and was first described in detail by L. Ron Hubbard in 1950 in his ground-breaking book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. It was in the pages of this book that Mr Hubbard introduced the reader to a completely workable technique he called auditing that anyone could learn. The goal of auditing in Dianetics is the erasure of the painful content of the reactive mind and thus restore to the person their true capabilities and basic goodness, a state Mr Hubbard called Clear.
This method is so workable it is still taught today in Churches of Scientology in both introductory and advanced courses as it is the only proven method to uniformly raise IQ, illiminate fears, unwanted painful emotions and restore self-confidence and respect.
